Medicare Advantage Plans Year Over Year Star Ratings by Size

4 Largest Organizations:  United Health, Humana, CSV-Aetna, and Kaiser

Next 4 Largest:  Anthem, Centene, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Cigna

In the above graph, we stratify the star ratings change into 5 groups:

  • All Organizations
  • Largest 4 Organizations
  • Next 4 Largest
  • Smaller Organizations (with < 50K members)
  • Other Organizations

241 health plans increased their star ratings out of 391. Very few went down this year. We know that CMS's disaster policies contributed to this change. But how is that distributed among insurance companies? Does parent company size play a role?

We know that many Medicare Advantage plans have received higher star ratings this year. This blog is the analysis of how the parent company ("Organizations") size impacts the star ratings change.

Star ratings are given not to the parent company but to the individual "contracts" (health plans in one or more states). Of the 391 contracts with 2022 Star Ratings, 135 are from the 4 largest companies by membership - United, Humana, CVS-Aetna, and Kaiser. Another 54 contracts are in the next 4 largest - Anthem, Centene, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, and Cigna.

Alternatively, here is the % movement of each group:

Graph that shows a stacked bar of the % of plans in each group that went up/down, etc.

There are better improvements in the largest health plans. Here is a graph of the # of plans with each star rating in the 4 groups.
