2022 has seen a remarkable improvement in Medicare Advantage Star Ratings. This year, a record 74 plans score 5 Stars. There are multiple factors driving this improvement, notably the disaster-related adjustments for covid-19. But we also see that larger insurers are becoming increasingly savvy about Star Ratings. For your armchair quarterbacks, we provide 3 different ways of looking at the data over a 5 year period:
1) The number of contracts by Star Rating
2) Total Membership in plans by Star Rating
3) Percentage of members in plans by Star Rating -- for easier comparison
NOTE: for 2018-2021, we use the final December enrollment. 2022 enrollment is not available yet as of writing, (AEP hasn't even started) and Plan's enrollment is taken from September 2021.
Total Membership by Rating
In 2022, most of the Medicare Advantage enrollees are in plans with quality ratings of 4 or more stars, an increase from 2021. An additional 3% of enrollees are in plans that were not rated so it showed as No Rating category. * 2022 shows contract population as of 9/2021.
Membership % by Star Rating
Here you can easily see that 4.5 and 5-Star plans have had tremendous growth relative to lower-rated plans.
